My Son

Today, 24 years ago at 8 AM, my labor was induced since I was past my original due date. After having been through all I had been through in my life, why would my pregnancy be any less difficult. At 4 1/2 months, I had surgery and now, over 9 months, they fire up the medicine to make my baby come out.

After a long labor, the details I will leave for you to read in my book or imagine in your mind, but after 6 hours of pushing, I am being wheeled into the operating room since my baby refused to come out! At around 8:15 PM a good 12 hours later, Johnathan Nevil Shute was introduced into this world with a swollen eye from the birth canal and a bruise to go with it. Over eight pounds of baby was handed to me with the little blue hat and that swollen face. My heart was changed forever.

Did I really carry a live human being in my belly for 9 months? Is this really that little person? Was he really mine to keep? Yes, these were the things running through my exhausted but happy mind. Although we have been giving birth forever, for me, I was completely in awe of what I had just done. I still could not believe it and kept staring at this little person who would not depend on me for the rest of his life.

Well, 24 years later, happy birthday my little man! You are my pride and joy, a blessing to have cared for, and my love is bursting every time I think of you. You have embraced life in every way imaginable, and the path we layed out for you has certainly been followed. We are so very proud of everything you have done and we look forward to embracing life with you forever. Giving birth to you has been the most accomplished thing I have every done in my life, alongside watching you grow and flourish. Happy Birthday, Baby.
