A Salute to a Friend

I felt a need to share this after so very long. I was thinking about this and wanted to share. It was a sad day for my son and his longtime girlfriend. Allison’s father has passed after a long and drawn out battle with his health. Joe had a liver transplant over 11 months ago and whatever problem someone could have had after a major surgery like that, Joe had it. The world picked the right person to fight because Joe was a tyrant about staying alive! He embraced his life, as well as his children’s lives, while battling through this ordeal. His wife fought by his side for “life” and together they kept us all up to date with their daily routines as well as ups and downs using a wonderful site called Caring Bridges. Everyone knew about any progress, fall backs, rants, surgeries, all the good and bad days. We all felt like a part of their lives even though they were in Florida and we are all in NJ. The children took turns flying down to see them, keeping Joe up to date with all of their lives as well. He was feisty to the end and only decided to sign the DNR when things kept spiraling downward and the light at the end of the tunnel began to dim. His body was spent but till the bitter end, his mind remained sharp. He planned his funeral, spoke to each of his children about his choices, and was able to say goodbye to us all. We did not know Joe that well, but he made a mark on our family and we only wish him good travels to his next life, where ever that may be. Smile down on all of us Joe, you will be missed.
