A Wonderful Donation

As many of you know, my closest friend Nancy recently lost her battle to brain cancer. Her husband Glen suggested in her obituary that in lieu of flowers, donations could be made to The Alesia Shute Foundation. This gesture truly touched my heart since Nancy has been my right hand and my sounding board for almost 3 years since my book and Foundation began. Even after becoming ill and losing her speech, I still bounced ideas off of her– happy with a nod or smile of approval or disapproval. Putting some...

Cloudy Days

Whenever the clouds come out it gives me a reason to think about how nice the sunshine is. When the days are gloomy, people tend to also be gloomy. Just like when someone in the family is sick, there is often a gloom that automatically  hangs over us. Adding gloomy weather to the mix can make you feel a little sad and vulnerable. Helping the Unfortunate

The other day, a close friend and I went to our friend Nancy’s home to go through all of her clothing. Nancy passed away about a month ago and her husband has asked for our help. Kathy and I went there this morning and went through all of her clothing, shoes etc. It was kind of bittersweet but we have agreed that gifting all of her things to a local women’s shelter was something that Nancy would approve of. Her wardrobe will be given to women throughout the area who have absolutely nothing and are in...

Breast Cancer Walk

For the past few years I have done a few walks benefitting Breast Cancer in October but the one that holds a special place in my heart is the walk at Cooper River Park in New Jersey. My friend Nancy who has recently passed was a regular there with her husband and for the past 3 years I have attended too. Since Nancy had become ill, we planned that her husband and I would walk for her, but now that she is gone, he and I, along with a group of close friends are walking in Nancy’s memory. Nancy was so very full...

Remembering

When I was a child I had some not so very happy experiences related to my illness. One of the things I often think about is how I was made fun of often at school. Missing class for long periods of time was one thing that made my classmates take notice of my “differences”, but having accidents in class, not being able to play during recess and having to skip gym class often made me a target. ¬†These were all grounds for being made fun of, and I often faced ridicule. Being like other children was...
